What Is Jaundice?
Jaundice, also known as
Kamala in Ayurveda, is a condition characterized by the
yellowing of the skin, mucous membranes, and the whites of the eyes. This yellowish hue occurs due
to an excess of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow-orange substance produced during the
normal breakdown of red blood cells. The liver processes bilirubin, but if the liver is diseased or
the bile ducts are obstructed, bilirubin can accumulate, leading to jaundice.
In Ayurveda, jaundice is considered a disorder of the
pitta dosha, which governs metabolism
and transformation in the body. An imbalance in pitta, often due to liver dysfunction, leads to the
accumulation of toxins and excess bile, resulting in jaundice.
